Hagar brings Cabo to UVSC

OREM - Sammy Hagar knows it's not feasible for everyone to trek down to Cabo San Lucas to visit his own personal cantina. So he's decided to bring it on tour with him. Hagar, performing Saturday at UVSC's McKay Events Center, has designed this tour's stage to mirror his Mexican club, the Cabo Wabo Cantina. The club is named after a song by Van Halen, the band Hagar fronted for an 11-year span starting in 1985. With Hagar serving as toastmaster, hard rock fans can expect a definite party atmosphere as the Red Rocker embarks on a purported two-hour trip through his extensive catalog of songs. The whole party atmosphere was inspired by Hagar's latest release, "Red Voodoo" and its signature track, "Mas Tequila" - the anthem which opens the album and sets an immediate fun-loving tone. "It's about fun, it's about partying," Hagar stated in a record company press release. "It makes me want to go to Cabo and play." Playing in Cabo is something Hagar does frequently. At the very least he makes an annual pilgrimage every October to perform for several days around his birthday. His love of the cantina no doubt helped inspire his current stage design - which goes to great lengths to recreate the club's interior. The props include a group of bar tables where 20 or more contest winners and invited guests sit onstage with the band as part of the show each night. The guests will also be served non-alcoholic drinks by waitresses throughout the performance. "It'll be very theatrical," Hagar says. "And if someone's up there snoozing, I'll throw them out and grab someone from the audience." Recent set lists of Hagar's tour, posted at his official Web site (www.redrocker.com), show a choice of songs representing all aspects of his career. Hagar's career took off in 1972 when he became the lead vocalist for Montrose. Montrose hits "Bad Motor Scooter" and "Rock Candy" have recently returned as live Hagar staples. The singer/guitarist embarked on a solo career in 1976. Over the next nine years he released 11 albums and penned rock anthems such as "There's Only One Way to Rock," "Three Lock Box," "Your Love is Driving Me Crazy" and "I Can't Drive 55." In 1985, Hagar replaced David Lee Roth as lead singer in Van Halen, a gig he was highly successful in until his acrimonious departure in 1996. Hagar's four studio albums with Van Halen all hit No. 1 in the U.S., while the band's 1993 double-live CD "Right Here, Right Now" made it to No. 5 on the charts. After his split with V.H., Hagar released "Marching to Mars." His subsequent tour originally featured a scheduled date at Saltair, which was canceled the day before when the frontman took ill. Thus, Hagar's date Saturday at UVSC is his first Utah appearance since performing with Van Halen at the Delta Center in September 1995. Hagar's band, dubbed the WaboRitas, includes Victor Johnson (guitar), Mona (bass), Jesse Harms (keyboards) and longtime Hagar associate David Lauser (drums).
